Makrigialos

The local beach stretches the entire length of Makrigialos and Analipsi, with several points of access.  The beach holds the coveted Blue Flag Award and we can testify to the crystal clear water which is ideal for swimming, snorkelling, or just having a paddle.  The beach slopes gently, is shallow and is considered to be very safe for smaller children to play.   There are some brilliant little waterfront tavernas and cafes where you can watch the world go by, or even watch your kids on the beach!   There are beds all along the beach.

DiaskariDiaskari beach

Diaskari beach is just along from Grapevines and is without question our favourite beach and  beach tavern. Turn left out of Grapevines and about 100 metres along the road there is a sign "Green Beach" pointing the way down to the beach.  There is parking around the tavern and along the beach. The water is beautifully clear.  The beach is great for children (and for adults who like a late evening/midnight swim).  The hammocks are fun!

On the other side of the headland from Diaskari is Lagada beach. There is some good snorkelling around the headland. This is also a naturist beach.

Kalamouhania beachKalamouhania

Kalamouhania is just over the harbour headland, from which there are splendid views across the bay.  Rocks at the far end of the beach are ideal for snorkelling.  There are a plenty of tavernas next to the beach.

Beyond Makrigialos

One of our favourite beaches is beyond Koutsouras on the way to Ierapetra. It’s called Long Beach.  It's a game of two halves. Drive down at the first way in and you will come to a a beach with good tourist facilties including watersports. Drive further along the beach and you will reach a few shades and a caravan selling Greek snacks and lovely cold cold beer!  Very ethnic, very friendly and very good!On the way to the Monastery of Moni Kapsa on the south coast there are a few isolated coves. Not all are visible from the road so watch out for cars parked by the roadside - always a good indicator of a hidden beach.
