Eating out
Eating out in Makrigialos Crete is a delightful experience. Crete’s tavernas and restaurants are still very affordable and children are welcome, however young, and often made a fuss of. Restaurants usually provide indoor and outdoor seating, and stay open until late as the Cretan tradition is to eat around 9 or 10 in the evening. Meals are taken at a leisurely pace; it is a social occasion and you can sit for hours taking in the sights and atmosphere.
Sometimes service can be rather haphazard with selected dishes arriving in the order they have been cooked. This is part of the charm of eating in Crete!
Our favourite restaurants in and around Makrigialos are:
Pepperia (The Pepper Tree) in Pefki Go on a Sunday evening and enjoy the local music. Price is about €20 for the set menu —several courses. Enjoy their special raki (made with herbs and honey). As one of our guests says "the traditional Cretan evenings in Pefki are a Must!". A free taxi is available both ways.
Petra Bay taverna. Turn left opposite Villea Village and head for the waterfront, turn right and carry on for about 200m.
The Dragon’s Cave about 2km east of Makrigialos. Fabulous views as you can see from the sunset above. This is family run and very good, reputedly one of the best restaurants in Crete. Despite that, their prices are very reasonable, but it's easy so easy to over order all of the special starters!
Gusto Pizzeria - said to do the best pizzas in town!
Granny Hanni’s is opposite Villea Village at the foot of the hill on the way into the village. I'm sure that's not the proper name but it's what everyone calls it. This is ethnic food at its best.
Porthyra about 25m up the hill from our villas is excellent. Brilliant birthday cake/ice cream/celebration on request!
Or you can head for the harbour and stop at any of the cafes, bars and restaurants along the waterfront.
