The drive from the North to the South of Crete takes in some of the most beautiful and breathtaking scenery possible.
From Iraklion Airport follow the new road past Hersonnisoss, Malia, Stalis, along the coast road to Agios Nikoliaos. Here the road turns right towards the south coastal town of Irepetra. At Irepetra you turn left along the coast road for about 30 minutes drive. After a few small resorts and bays you arrive at the beautiful villages of Analipsis and Makrigialos.
30 kms east of Ierapetra, Makrigialos is a wonderful summer resort in the Libyan sea. Adjacent to Analipsi, Makrigialos was once a tiny fishing village, but is now an established popular resort due to the friendly local hospitality. The village is still unspoilt compared with the larger resorts on the north coast and is an ideal spot for those searching for quieter holidays, with visitors returning year after year. The name "Makrigialos" means "long beach", a long sandy beach with crystal clear, shallow waters, which is perfect for children and non-swimmers, and further out for more experienced swimmers. The beach is lined with a good variety of tavernas to suit all tastes as is the fishing port, which is the most picturesque part of the village. From the port, there is a boat which leaves each morning for the beautiful island of Koufonisi, returning late afternoon.
